1971- VW Singlecab Pickup
I've had this truck as my Daily Driver for 24 years. During that time it has been a multiple show winner while also being featured in the Winter 2023 edition of VW Trends magazine. 60K or Best offer.
Let's talk about the truck:
Over the 24 years I've owned it I did the initial restoration when I bought it, then the final restoration after I retired which is as you see it. The 1600 engine just went through a total rebuild with a new block and everything inside it just recently including new muffler, heater boxes, Solex carb rebuilt by Tim at Volksbitz. The rebuilt Transmission was done by Rancho Transmissions.
1971 is the first year for Front power assist Disc Brakes. The entire brake system has been replaced. The tires are HD Hankook RA08 195R. Stock Rims with added trim rings.
The body was completely restored and painted with Acrylic Enamel single stage paint VW L87 Pearl White. Wet sanded and buffed out. Hand pinstriping done by Ed May of NJ.
The Truck Bed: I bought the truck from a cabinet shop on Long Island. When I got it the bed was covered with the 1/4" Aluminum Diamond Plate you see. I removed it hoping to find a mint original bed under it but no luck. This was a work truck and the bed was badly dented. I cut off the sheet metal bed, straightened the cross beams, and remounted the aluminum. The tailgates needed work and I replaced the bottom 4 inches of metal. Then to match the bed I covered the gates with 1/8" Polished Aluminum Diamond Plate. I punched in louvers to allow the gates to breath and not hold moisture between the panels. Also added was the third brake light.
I custom made the rear window Jail bars to protect the rear window as they did on the insides of a VW Bus. This also adds a nice look for the curtains which kept the cold off my neck during the cold New Jersey winters.
This truck came with dual treasure chest doors. Luckily before the final restoration they started reproducing brand new treasure chest doors so I ordered 2 of them. I have a light and switches inside each door should I need to look for something at night. The one side has a 2 draw cabinet for extra parts and tools, next to the spare tire.
The cab was completely redone with new Headliner, New Door and kick panels, seat padding and covers. New floormat and It has a Kenwood FM/CD High Powered Stereo. In Bay Windows they made the compartment under the front seat that the spare tire could lay flat. I put the spare back under the bed, then closed in the top to turn the spare tire compartment into the speaker cabinet housing two 6x9 Blaupunkt speakers. They face up and so the sound wouldn't get muffled by the seat cushions I covered the bottom of the seat with a sheet of stainless steel so the sound hits that and comes out as surround sound. It Kicks!
The new windshield is clear like original without that heavy tint along the top. The dash is perfect with no cracks. Steering wheel was also restored. I covered it which gives a nice feel and extra grip when turning. The shifter was custom made with a 6" extension putting it at the perfect height. Also and under dash parcel tray. And door rain visors.
Along with the Tow Hitch I also have a tow plug wired in. I moved the backup lights to the bottom of the bumper and rewired the truck to put yellow lens under the tail lights for bigger and brighter directionals. The front bumper was extended out 2 extra inches and all the bumper guards are also new.
Front end was all rebuilt with New Steering Box, Drag Link, and Tie rod ends.
Without going on and on, if it could be replaced, it was. I loved this truck and so will you. You don't have to do a thing except drive and enjoy it. I also have a bolt in Bike Rack for the bed and 10 eyehooks for strap hold downs.
Why am I selling it after 24 years? We now moved into a 55+ community and I need the space in the garage. Also being retired I no longer need the truck for doing projects, or hauling parts to and from shows.
